One of my clients quoted his personal trainer who said that weight training was the only discipline where failure was essential. The reason being that muscle growth occurs as a response to muscle failure.
I love this quote and actually think that failure is not just essential for weight training. It is essential for growth in any area of our lives.
Failure gives us valuable information that helps us learn and grow. For example, a failure in loosing weight despite doing all “the right things” may prompt us to look deeper and find where we sabotage ourselves. Maybe we do not love ourselves enough or we receive a sub-conscious pay-off from being overweight.
If we fail at work, it may help us see that we are not in the right profession or it may encourage us to improve our skills.
A failure in a scientific experiment may reveal faults in current models and practices which could then lead to new inventions and theories.
Where do you feel that you have failed in life? What can you learn from it and how can you use the failure for your personal growth?
Learn to embrace your failures!
