This week, a client of mine said I had taken him to a “red or blue pill” moment. The terms “red pill” and “blue pill” come from the movie The Matrix. They refer to a choice between the willingness to learn a potentially unsettling or life-changing truth by taking the red pill or remaining in contented ignorance with the blue pill.

My client had received his Enneagram personality report and found some of its findings deeply unsettling. It held up a mirror pointing to unconscious motivations behind his behaviours which he found hard to face. It took him a few weeks to digest the information, do some deep soul searching and finally accept the truth of the findings, as well as the potential transformational impact they could have on his life. He told me that this was a “red pill” and “blue pill” moment for him: Did he really want to dig deeper into this work or return into blissful ignorance?
Yet, here is the thing: once you have seen the personality patterns the Enneagram shows us, it’s hard to “un-see” them.
So why go there?
Because once we understand who we really are and how we constantly play out rigid survival strategies, we have a choice to connect to our true essence behind the mask of our personality; and we gain a completely new tool set that will help us be more effective in living the life we want. So my client decided to go deeper into the Enneagram growth work with me. He took the red pill!
So what it’s going to be for you? The blue or the red pill?
